[Inktober 2016] Day 24—Potoel the Pie Maker

(Potoel the Pie-Maker
(Key word: one dozen)

Potoel makes pies. Pies and sausage. His wares are known throughout the city for their delicious taste and unique spices. Potoel developed his recipes while in the Wars against the city-state of Berl. Unknown to any, the Wars also turned Potoel into a high-functioning ghoul.

Upon returning home, he opened his shop selling meat pies he bakes on the premesis and sausages he makes in his basement. His wife left him soon after he opened the shop; at least, that's what he claims.

In his sub-basement, he keeps a baker's dozen of "fresh" sources: the city's beggars and hopeless are kidnapped and kept here until he's ready for a new batch. The occasional wealthy citizen appears there once in a while too.

It's true what they say: the less people know about what goes into their sausage, the better they'll sleep at night.

[The Stronghold 'Zine] Issue #3 Has Hatched!

Baby A'Tuin is Born!

Yep. My own micro-sized version of the World Turtle has arrived. I cannot wait to hear what you think.

The cover of this issue was provided by +Jim Magnusson.
+Matt Hildebrand  and +Ripley Stonebrook  have kindly  donated interior illustrations.

The first few copies came off the printer last night; the assembly process has begun. The link to buy your own copy is below; still only a print 'zine, in the old-school-style tradition.

**You can see a preview of the contents here. You can still pick up copies of Issues #1 and #2 as well here. --OR-- click on the link below to go ahead and buy #3.**

When you do pick up a copy, please drop me a line, especially if you use anything from Issue #3 in your game.

[The Stronghold 'Zine] Contractions Have Started! Issue #3 Sneak Preview.

Final editing phase on Issue #3 of The Stronghold 'Zine has begun.  Last night, in fact.

Just need to proofread, finish the Introduction, and make sure layout survives the conversion process.

And then I can release it into the cold, cruel world.

What's in store?

Well, besides some fantastic art contributed by +Jim Magnusson, +Matt Hildebrand, and +Ripley Stonebrook, we have the following:
  • A collection of terrific—yet cursed—capes and cloaks
  • A new class: the Warder. A type of protector/bodyguard class for the wealthy and paranoid.
    • "[A] new kind of protector: one who was talented enough to heal them when injured, to avoid pitfalls when traveling, to detect the poison of a would-be assassin, and to have the strength and fighting ability to fend off a coup."
  • A new NPC: an information collector and thief-master, complete with a couple treasure caches...and a twist.
  • A new locale, The Crag: a neighborhood filled with merchants, inns, and temples, including suggested rumors, sample wares, and brief NPC sketches, all intended to provide some DM seeds. Oh, yeah...a map of the neighborhood too. It's set in my personal city of Coldtreath, but applicable in any good sized city.
  • A series of tables, to be used to create random meals and foodstuffs for both local and roadside taverns. I'm kinda proud of this one. O.K., in all honesty, I'm really proud of this one...mostly because it was birthed in the midst of a dream and survived into waking. Here's a couple random samples:
    • Mystery cakes
    • Roasted snake &  horse stew
    • Shredded pheasant pudding
    • Diced snails & cheese
    • Fried dog hash
Bonus news: the Warder Class is presented in a 3.X version and a Swords & Wizardy/OSR version. In order to accommodate the OSR version, this issue has been increased from the regular 24 pages to 28 pages.

Keep an eye out; the release is imminent!

[From the Mailbag] Planetary Transmissions #1 Received!

Unless you've been living in a cave--or have been ignoring your OSR gaming feed--you've heard in the past couple months of the new system: White Star: White Box Science Fiction Roleplaying from Barrel Rider Games. I've been looking for a good Sci-Fi system for a while--collecting them, really--and grabbed up White Star as soon as it was released. (I'm actually anxiously awaiting the dead tree version.) I haven't had a load of time to peruse the PDF, but I like what I've seen: simple, elegant, and ultimately customizable.

This last is borne out in the sheer volume of third-party stuff that's been put out since the release of White Star. Heck, they've already had a little online controversy of their own, which will not be rehashed here or given any more print space. Suffice it to say, the system is kinda blowing up all over.

Enter Planetary Transmission by Leviathan Publishing. Issue #1 was released back at the end of May 2015 and Issue #2 is just about ready to be released. Just yesterday I got my hands on a copy of Issue #1 and ... HOLY COW.

This is some good stuff.

I think one of the marks of a good 'zine--or a good supplement of any kind, really--is its application to other settings/systems. It's why I try and stack a boatload of system-neutral stuff into The Stronghold. Well, Leviathan did it with Issue #1.

Just on my first read-through, I could see how both the new creature (the Dreg) and the creature template (the Strain) could be taken from the stars and translated to my 3.x campaign. The articles on "Allegiances" and "Contacts" spark some ideas for organizations and guilds in my campaign world, as does the article on "Armor Options." I'm already framing some of my own armor options and modifiers based on appearance, utility, etc.

The Death table easily transports to a fantasy setting for adventure hooks and quest ideas, and the Merchant table provides a useful NPC background for a fantasy bazaar. Granted, the Necro-sword would take some tweaking and the spaceships don't do much for a fantasy setting, but they are still cool ideas for a sci-fi campaign.  (I just need to convince my group to play some sci-fi, dang it all.) OH! Paper minis, too! BONUS!

All in all, a terrific first 'zine. I can't wait to get my hands on Issue #2....which should be hitting the printers any day now.

Do yourself a favor: Grab your own copy ASAP.

[From the Mailbag] Mixed Bag of Goodies

An odd day today, deep in the throes of some manner of food allergy--dinner last night got contaminated somehow.... All day today the symptoms have been getting worse; currently I’m feeling like a bad case of the flu. Body aches, dizziness, nausea...then add in the bloating, excessive gas, and “bodily excretions” and I’m down for the count.

Fortunately, we were able to have some family fun today before the symptoms really set their claws into my midsection. My oldest two kids have been at a Youth Conference since Wednesday--a spiritual retreat for the youth of my church, in which all the youth of a certain region gather together for inspiration and spiritual education & growth. Did it myself as a teenager without complaint. This one was held at a two-year junior college 110 miles south of our home; for a variety of reasons, we decided to circumvent the norm (the church youth leaders usually convey them home) by driving down early in the morning with my youngest two in tow, pick up the eldest two, and do some “daycation” day trip stuff. Whenever we head that far south, we usually take the interstate, but when we head home, we tend to take the old state highway back up. This takes you through some quaint little towns and farm communities and is a restful, scenic trip.

This time around, we stopped at a town’s “Art and History Museum”--mostly because the wife’s ancestors helped found the town and I wanted her to have the chance to see some pictures or artifacts from her family and show them to the kids. Sure enough, her ancestors’ names were on a plinth right outside the converted mansion, and then in several of the rooms and nooks were artifacts and pictures of her relations, including a steamer trunk, baby clothes, and musical instruments of her relations that came across the plains with the early Mormon immigrants. Got some great pictures for the family album and the kids had fun.

(Incidentally, I loved the layout of this house and quickly sketched out some ideas to use in a future map. Inspiration is everywhere!)

By this time, the symptoms were grabbing hold and we still had another 60-odd miles to travel. Much to my delight when we arrived home, Fed Ex had delivered some books I’ve been anxiously awaiting. There’s nothing better than learning back-ordered books have finally come into stock and been shipped out. I hate my money hanging out there doing someone else some good while I wait and wait without product.

The only mitigating factor to my happiness (besides my physical ailments) was the state of the package. Noble Knight Games has always served me well in the past, without serious complaint. Even when I had an OOP miniature arrive broken, they rectified the situation immediately. But this was ridiculous.

Rather than using a small box, or even a padded envelope, to protect my shipment, they essentially “flat-packed” the books within a collapsed shipping box. The ends were taped with packing tape (except for slits on the side, which would allow dirt, etc., into the package).

Inside, they were wrapped in layers of butcher paper for padding. Not bubble wrap, or even packing peanuts (like if they were in a normally assembled box) I'm not exactly sure what the "cushion rating" is of butcher paper wrapped around objects, but apparently that's what my order rated. Now, when I got them out, they WERE held in one large plastic zipper-close-type bag. This would have mollified my concerns re: damage, except that the main bag WAS NOT SEALED (See below). This, boys and girls, in case you were not aware, drastically reduces the protective power of a plastic zipper-close-type bag. Sigh.

But here’s what I received, with a squeal or two of delight from me.

First off, two titles from Expeditious Retreat Press--Monster Geographica: Marsh & Aquatic and Monster Geographica: Forest. These will fit well with the Monster Geographica: Underground volume that I already have in the collection. While I don’t really like the layout of these books (they’re arranged alphabetically under respective CR rather than like traditional monster manuals AND they don’t use the easier-to-read “one page, one monster” format) and they don’t have any artwork, they’re still (a) bestiaries and (b) full of fun, different, and mean critters. Plus, hey, MONSTERS, am I right?

Next was a volume for which I’ve searched for the past year: the Encyclopedia of Villains from Fast Forward Entertainment. Now, I’ve seen/heard lots of complaints about FFE, and some of that is justified and has kept me from picking up some various titles in the past. This one, however, comes recommended by +Tim Shorts  and with good reason. I think Tim likes NPCs about as much as I do...which is a lot. But, for all my devotion to 3.x, I will admit that statblocks and rolling up NPCs is far from my favorite gaming activity. I’ll jump at any chance I get to grab hold of some pre-gen NPCs; add in the fact that it’s an entire book of NPCs and that there’s a wide range of CRs: added bonus. Then add in backstory, associations, maps, etc.? WINNING PRODUCT RIGHT HERE.

I grabbed a copy of Arcana Unearthed because I like Monte Cook’s work, I like the Book Of Experimental Might, and it has some intriguing options/alternative rules. Plus, it was less than $5 and in great shape, so that certainly didn’t hurt.

Finally, the piece de resistance: Armory’s 30-Sided Dice Gaming Tables. I’ve always wanted a copy, but never found one in good shape at the right time. This time I lucked out. I love tables, especially d30 tables, and these are all useful, both at the table and for world-building. The contents take me back to a more innocent time of gaming and of life. The tables are printed around random black and white line images of lead miniatures from various distributors. The back cover is an advertisement for Armory’s 30-sided dice and “dice inking pens.” The text itself is typed out in classic dot-matrix Courier font; I’d use it in my own Stronghold ‘Zine for nostalgia if I didn’t hate the look of Courier so much. But the quaintness and nostalgia was definitely palpable, and the typos (“I do not have to many” jumped right off the page at me) added to the feeling that this really was printed in someone’s basement (or after hours on the shared work printer and then copied under some sucker’s customer code) and took me back decades. Even though this one came bagged and boarded for protection and storage, I think it’s going to see some use.

So, the day balances out. I have some reading material for when I curl up in the fetal position from the physical effects of my allergies. That’s always a good thing. At least I’m done with Issue #2 of the Stronghold ‘Zine until it comes back from my proof readers. Plus, tomorrow is Free RPG Day, one of my most favorite days of the year (although from the website it appears that several companies will be sending out the same re-tread free items from last year (and the year before, etc.)).

Oddly enough, I received shipping notices for this package and a package from another company on the same day; this one from Wisconsin and the other from Missouri. Both sent Fed Ex. Both sent using the same shipping option. Both hit the local distribution hub on the same day. The Missouri package says that the scheduled delivery on the other package is Wednesday, the 24th.  Hmm. Either some higher power doesn’t want me to explode from over-happiness today, or there’s something about Wednesday that requires some “Found Stuff” happiness. I’m not sure which option is more frightening.

[The Stronghold 'Zine] The Countdown Begins to #2

That's right, boys and girls. I'm officially starting the countdown to Issue #2 of The Stronghold 'Zine. I'm just waiting on one more piece of artwork and one more bit of info to finish up an article, then it's Foreword and Table of Contents time.

After that, it's a trip to the office supply store for a new color of cardstock for the cover.

Then the fun begins anew.

What's in store? Well, let's see.... Where's my draft ToC?

O.K. First, we've got some stats for three new critters; one of these is friendly, one can be friendly, and one is...erm...not so much.

There's a new locale, with a new map. Two of the critters are also associated with the locale, as is the new NPC I've included. In addition to the statted critters, there are nearly a dozen-and-a-half new and system neutral critters described. There's another installment of system-neutral random treasure tables included; these can be used with the locale as well as your own setting.

NOT associated with the locale are a series of new wondrous magic items; these are fairly system-neutral as well. And finally, even though the random nose-picking article was not a big hit with some readers last issue, my philosophy is that every game needs a little bit of humor. Accordingly, and due to the joint fault of +Tim Shorts and +Jason Zavoda, there's another useful (I think) set of random tables to add a little bit of humor and ...erm... flavor to your game.

Keep watching for the roll-out announcement and purchase links to be coming soon!

[A to Z April] W is for Wombripper, Thokk

Thokk Wombripper is a young, ambitious warrior. His orc mother died in childbirth and he was raised by his father until age 13, as she did not want her child raised by her evil, violent tribe. At puberty his father attacked him in a drunken rage. Thokk killed him in self-defense and was cast out of his village. He was taken in by his mother's tribe and given an orc-name "Wombripper." Several years of living with the tribe instilled a hatred in him for his human side, but did not turn him to their evil ways; he never fully accepted their gods for his own, choosing instead to continue worshiping Adys, a human goddess of strength and war.

At 23 years old, Thokk is still growing; he is already 6'1" tall and a muscular 255 pounds. He keeps his black hair trimmed short and his brown eyes filled with hatred for humankind. He is handsome for an orc, but that obviously does not translate to human terms. Despite his feelings towards humans, Thokk is generally cheerful; he lives under what he perceives as the guidance of both Fate and Envy. The only thing he loves more than his orcish greatsword is a good story.

[A to Z April] P is for Papa Quimby (npc)

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/
The man known to Coldtreath as ‘Papa Quimby’ is a calm man, not given to violence. This was not always the case.

Quimby was the third son of a minor noble family. As such, he had little choice but to go into military service. The military suited him quite well; he learned rapidly all the skills necessary for survival as a soldier. He is a grizzled veteran of the Teandrocan Wars, the War against the Frustra, and the Chitri Campaigns. Few others can claim those distinctions. He has spilled more blood in his day than any other man in Coldtreath.

Today, however, he eschews conflict and violence. Most believe it was the loss of his left leg that took away his spirit. Others believe that he’d simply reached his limit. Neither case fully reaches the mark.

On a particularly bad day during his final days in the Chitri Forest, Quimby found himself huddled in the hollow formed by the massive roots of an ancient tree. He was being hunted by a squad of Chitri; he was badly wounded with a tourniquet tied around his left leg. The Chitri hunted, in part, by tracking strong emotion. Quimby was highly emotional and, knowing the Chitri, understood that he was going to die.

That was when he felt fur under his hands, fur layered over strong, lithe muscles. Hardly daring to move, Quimby glanced down to find an odd cat laying under his hands, purring at his touch. The cat had six legs, something Quimby had never seen before. He nearly recoiled at the sight, but the animal’s purr was calming him; the feel of its fur beneath his touch relaxing. It felt like the finest silk. To this day, Quimby has no clear recollection of how long he laid there, curled around this animal, petting it and holding it. At some point he knows several squads of Chitri passed his hiding space; becalmed by the cat, they overlooked him. He was found by his men and carried to safety with the odd cat curled on the stretcher next to him, refusing to leave his side.

Today, Quimby is motivated largely by greed and avarice. He has learned much about animals and his cat is still at his side. However, his human relationships are non-existent, and he has filled that part of his lonely life with gold and silver, of which his animal finds bring in sufficient to make him comfortable.

His inability to make connections with any other humanoid keeps him wary towards others, even towards his customers, and especially towards outsiders and strangers. This wariness causes him to make snap judgments based on appearance, first impressions, and so forth. He could probably be persuaded to change his attitude, but it is unlikely that he would ever consider another two-legged being a true or close friend. But even in the worst of conditions, he is unlikely to act on his feelings . . . unless someone were to push him too far. If someone did, they would find he was still extremely competent at his craft.

Quimby is not physically imposing in any way and never has been. Bronze eyes look out from a craggy face topped with black hair. Average height and weight, he’s not overly attractive to the opposite sex, unless it were for his coin purse.

Quimby trusts no one but himself and the cat, which he calls, The Cat, clearly enough that a total stranger can hear the capital letters. He is a sucker for animals of all kinds, except for other humans (particularly female). During quiet times he still feels discontent at where he is in life and who he is, but he tries to drown those feelings with his work.

[A to Z April] K is for Kay Cynyrsson, Sir (npc)

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/
Sir Kay Cynyrsson was born as the bastard brother to the King, as his mother was assaulted by the previous king, known as Nayrum the Sinner. He was never officially recognized as king-spawn and took after his mother’s family in appearance, although all in the kingdom know who he is. The current king, his half-brother, has privately recognized the kinship with Sir Kay, knighted him, and even takes care of Kay’s mother in her dotage. Kay now uses an altered version of the previous king’s nickname as his surname; he serves with no complaint from the King (although many members of the court are scandalized by the effrontery).

At Kay’s birth, a seer prophesied that Kay would forever be emotionally cold and withdrawn. It was also said that he would be without peer in his stubbornness. The prophecy continued that he would be nearly impervious to harm throughout his life, especially from fire or magic, that he could cast fire from his hands, that he would need little sleep, and that he would grow as tall as the trees. It was also said that Kay’s sword would be deadly, and any man merely wounded by a blow from Kay’s sword would find the wound impossible to heal.

Grown now, many of the prophecies have been found to be at least partially true (if even only by ownership of magical items). Kay is over 7-and-a-half feet tall with the rest of him in proportion to his height; he is a truly massive man. Others find him extraordinarily attractive, although his near-constant irritability and pride are off-putting to most. He has a flawless complexion; any wound he suffers does not scar. With hazel eyes and red hair along with his size, he is the center of attention in any crowd.

Sir Kay is deeply religious, recognizing several gods’ authority, but serves no one but the King. He is extremely efficient and dangerous in battle, annoyed by sycophants, fools, and those he perceives to lack honor.

[A to Z April] H is for Helzak, Darthen (npc)

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/
Darthen Helzak is named for the wasteland, his hearthland, translated roughtly into the Common tongue as “God’s Anvil” (known to most as the Ashwaste). They believe that the hardships imposed by the wasteland upon their people is a refining forge, the anvil upon which their God beats and shapes their souls into a divine form.

He was born in the Wasteland, in God’s Anvil. His grandfather, Huragram, was a water miner who discovered a subterranean river, becoming a wealthy individual and a powerful leader of the tribes of God’s Anvil. Huragram wielded a khopesh which he named “Beldorida” meaning, roughly, “Breath of the First Gem.” The sword is graceful and slender, crafted of steel, ivory, and gold. Sapphires and rubies are set in her hilt. First impressions leave the impression of a noble’s showpiece, something made for looks and attention rather than for utility. Those who have met Beldorida’s edge and tested the wielder’s mettle quickly learn that she is perfectly balanced and eminently deadly. Her grip is wrapped in copper and silver wire, providing a perfect grip even when the wielder’s hand is slick.

Darthen now wields the khopesh of his forefathers. The source of the blade is unknown, although she is rumored to have come from one of the great mythical cities in the east full of powerful magic. Huragram found the blade while on a personal vision quest out in the barren lands of God’s Anvil. She was entombed within a nodule of stone found deep within the sands; the nodule also contained a portal to the Plane of Earth. He took the discovery of Beldorida as a sign and returned to the stronghold, although he was weak, weary, and near death. He kept an unbreakable grip on Beldorida during the entire time of his recovery. Upon returning to health, he carved out for himself a powerful position among the tribes. He ruled the tribes of the Anvil for nearly a century; when he died of natural causes, his skaalds buried Beldorida with him.

After a century of ruling over chaos and hardship, Darthen’s father disinterred Beldorida after seers told him that the powers of the buried weapon of Fire and Air were being suppressed by the powers of Earth. He recovered Beldorida and wielded the blade with power as he strove to link the Anvil’s dwar together again. He was not as successful as Huragram at the task, and never as powerful. Darthen was raised on stories of Beldorida, a blade that practically thrummed with power, as if the steel was scarcely able to contain the sorceries placed upon it. Darthen’s father was never able to learn the secrets of the blade.

Darthen’s father and his seers feared that the spirits of Earth and Stone had, in fact, subsumed Beldorida’s power. Darthen has been entrusted with the blade and exiled from the Wastelands. Where Beldorida was once meant to be his hearth’s last line of defense, Darthen is now her only protection.

Darthen stands somewhat taller and leaner than a normal dwarf. His hair and beard are braided and matted, resembling dreadlocks. He wears simple leathers and cotton garments, his undertunic spun from subterranean spider silk, with his armored shirt composed of long bones tied together with plaited leather. Leather gauntlets protect his hands from the sand and sun; they double as weapons, with small metal spikes set above each knuckle.

[Found Item Friday] Pristine PHB!

In my city, we have a used bookstore that has been in operation since 1929. It was housed in a GREAT location in downtown, three floors of new and used books, rare books, odd books. Especially great was the basement--meandering corridors, random rooms filled with ramshackle shelving, everything was just on the edge of controlled chaos. It was always great to go in, if even to browse. (It is said that one of the Magistrate Judges at the nearby Federal Courthouse made a visit there every lunchtime of every weekday of his tenure as judge until his death a few years back. I believe it, based on what I knew of the man.) Recently the third-generation owners made a controversial decision and moved the bookstore from its historic location to a nearby mall location.

My post is not about that bookstore.

Instead, it's about the location. A newer, Johnny-come-lately (relatively) bookstore seized on the opportunity and consolidated their three or four smaller stores and moved into the space. The shelving is all a bit newer and more modern, but their selection is just as eclectic as the "historic" bookstore. I hadn't had a chance to visit since the move; all that changed this morning.

About ten years ago, the original owners added a coffee shop to one side of the store front. I've never frequented the place, mostly because I don't drink coffee, but also because their baked goods were exorbitantly-priced, mediocre-quality items. But I had a meeting yesterday and they wanted to meet there to chat.

This was a mistake.

After the meeting, I wandered the aisles. Call it fate, call it karma...I wandered straight to the "game" section. Most of it was Call of Duty guides (and other various video games). But then...the infamous binding jumped off the shelf at me.

Now, you may ask yourself why I'm so excited by this, even though you should know I'm a big 3.x fan. I'd be a lot happier if it was a 3.5 PHB, but I'm still happy with this. Why?
  1. It's in pristine condition.
  2. It's for the use and education of my kids.
  3. It's "close enough" to 3.5 or Pathfinder. Especially for my kids.
  4. Did I mention it was in pristine condition? The binding is still tight and the Character Creator disk in the back? Still sealed in the plastic envelope. The Wizards of the Coast order form is also still folded inside the back cover.
  5. Oh, and it was only $6.00.
  6. Yes, I said $6.000
Yeah. I'm pretty pleased with myself. They also had a 3.0 DMG in the same condition; sadly, I only had so much cash with me yesterday. I figure the PHB will get more use anyway.

Also grabbed was this little beauty: "In the Belly of the Beast" by Mike Mearls. It was only $1.00 and in very good condition; the pull-out pages of NPCs, etc. was still intact, for example. I grabbed it for that fact alone. It's more of a political intrigue than my normal fare, but it still has some good fodder for combat and adventure too. It's got some good, dangerous NPCs with some good backstory; they'll take a little beefing-up, as the equipment lists are fairly generic. Maybe it'll be good for my players to do a little bit more role-playing; it requires the careful negotiation and manipulation of three rival factions who are all ready to fight. Hmm. I'll just have to find the right place to drop it into a campaign.

Unfortunately, the store is now on my radar. NOT good for my wallet.

Printing Press Installed at the Stronghold

This post serves as the formal announcement. The Stronghold is about to see print.

Well, OK... "about" is a relative term. But it's in the process.

That's right. A 'Zine is on its way. Inspiration such as Christian Walker, Tim Shorts, Dylan Hartwell, and Matt Jackson has made me yearn to have my own musings put into black and white and mailed out to various and sundry parts of the world.

Or at least that's my hope.

There's going to be a definite 3.X Edition focus; that's just how I roll. Of course, there'll be some system neutral stuff, some fiction, some tables, maps, NPCs. Everything that you've come to expect from the Stronghold.

And that'll be it's name: The Stronghold.

Yeah, I was inspired by Tim's "The Manor"--I had a couple other thoughts for titles but he gave his thumbs up (and blessing) to "The Stronghold."

The first few articles are penned. I just need a little more stuff, some art, and then figure out how to assemble it all together. I REALLY don't need to try and learn new software right now. We'll see how it goes. I also have to figure out the whole OGL and copyright thing.

Random Table: Picking

In celebration and honor of having my first set of Zocchi dice, I've created my first d2 and d5 tables, for use, obviously, with my new d2 and d5.

Plus, I need to pay a little Joesky tax. OK, a LOT of Joesky tax. Call this a down-payment on my tax payment plan.

Your characters come up against an NPC. He's a bumpkin and a character. You need a little bit more color...flavor...to his description. You're wracked with indecision. I have you covered.

[A to Z April] Y is for Yvus Toothsplinter (npc)

I spent an hour crafting a great back-story and description for this NPC only to have my laptop eat the entire entry.

Fortunately, I still had the stats, so I’m presenting this NPC as is. Let me be frank, though. This is no simple NPC. This is not a random merchant in a bazaar, it's no skulking thief in the alleyway.

To be blunt: he’s a villain. BAM.

There you have it. Plain and simple.

Without further ado, I give you: Yvus Toothsplinter, Good-bane Dwarf-slayer.

(Incidentally, he has about six more "titles" that all vanished with his back-story. Add in whatever you like and whatever fits.) Use him, plug him into your own campaign, give him whatever back-story fits your story. I imagine him to be a recurring villain that will harry and annoy your party.

Please note: All my NPCs are free for you to use. Please, feel free to use them. All I ask is a note to let me know if, where, when, and how it was used. Especially Yvus; I'd like to know player/character reaction, back-story, and especially a body count (if any).

[A to Z April] V is for Vaena Shieldbadger (npc)

Vaena Shieldbadger is an orphan. She knows nothing of her parents or ancestry. She was found in a burned-out caravan by a human ranger named Tephye Wardsalt. Tephye took Vaena in, raised her as his own and taught her everything she knows. About six years ago, he was killed by a rampaging pack of ghouls, fostering in Vaena an undying hatred for all things undead. Tephye’s leather armor is the only thing she has to remember Tephye. Since her adoptive father’s death, Vaena’s experiences have taught her the horror of unnatural aberrations. Together with her riding dog companion named “Mel,” she travels the forests and byways across the length and breadth of Dran, although she currently calls the wooded foothills outside of Coldtreath "Home."

Vaena has straight blond hair and striking ice blue eyes. She stands average height for a halfling and is considered quite attractive. She has one shortfall: she is filled with pride. She believes she was trained by the best and is, therefore, the best now that Tephye is dead. She believes in no deity or higher power beyond that of luck. Besides her animal companion, Mel, she loves what others would call "creepy crawly things." Vermin, insects, and reptiles all have their place in nature, they are a part of nature and therefore revered by Vaena. She never keeps more money around than she needs for supplies and equipment; she hates shiny things that other female halflings of her age would swoon over. Other than honing her own skills, she loves teaching the odd woodcraft skills to others, just as she was taught by Tephye.
