S is for Sheriff

Darryill Epting is the current sheriff of the city of Coldtreath. Unlike the mayoral position, his is an elected position; he is currently up for re-election. Sheriff Epting is a long-time friend and ally of the Mayor, who is taking advantage of his popularity and position to stump for the sheriff.

Darryill is an ex-soldier by training and a thief at heart. Nearing his sixtieth year, his years in the service have both hardened and softened his personality; he learned compassion for the down-trodden and the oppressed. He had to kill many men, however, and is no stranger to death; he kills when necessary without remorse, swinging his favorite heavy mace side to side, “breakin’ heads and teachin’ manners,” as he says.

He stands just over five feet tall, with green eyes and shocking red hair. While he has a good self-image, he is still moved by flattery. Foolish bravery, however, sets his blood boiling. His good self-image aside, he is barely competent at his job. He has been described as “Not the strongest or best sheriff Coldtreath has seen, but the best in a long while. The criminals hate him; we suspect that he’s as much a target of assassins as the Mayor.”

The Mayor’s people have not let Sheriff Epting assist in the investigation into the rumored assassination plots against the Mayor. They know that investigation is not his area of expertise; he is better at enforcement than investigation. Even better than his enforcement is his gambling; a little game of Guards and Lanterns and he’s happy. Not just happy, but able to spring for an upgrade on dinner...if his ever-present greed lets him.

Darryill suffered through a miserable childhood. He was the oldest of five children; the other four bullied and harassed him without mercy. His father allowed it to go on, thinking that it would toughen up his eldest son. For this reason, Darryill has not spoken to his father in over forty years. This actually is a source of much grief and stress in his life, because Darryill idolizes his mother; his unwillingness to speak to his father means that he is only able to steal guarded moments with his mother when his father is out of the house. More recently those moments are few and far between as both his mother and father are in poor health.

The family emigrated to Coldtreath from the east shortly after Darryill’s birth. They are not well-liked in Coldtreath, his father having immediately entered into a feud with another family–an established family of the city–nearly as soon as they moved in. He has spent years trying to put this trouble behind him and make up for his father’s mistakes in the city. He has made great in-roads, but still has a long way to go in some quarters.
