Who's Who: Gilifra Gravelfoot [OSR Challenge NPC]

I suppose you could call this part 2 of today's NPC posting: the other half of the stone-crossed dwarven lovers, Gilifra Gravelfoot, from the OSR Challenge: Short Adventure, Stony Limits.

Gilifra Gravelfoot is a stubborn dwarf. She has a silly notion, at least according to her parents, that she must wed for love. Her father, the Clan Chieftain of the Gravelfoot Stronghold has tired of waiting for her to give him grandchildren. He has arranged a political marriage with the male heir of the neighboring stronghold: The Darkhold. The Darkhold heir is a mousy little thing, short even for dwarves, and lacking in many areas. However, the Darkhold commands great wealth, spectacular mines, and excellent farms. As Gravelfoot’s main rival, such a marriage would strengthen Gravelfoot’s position and protect both strongholds from disagreement.

Upset over her father’s decision, Gilifra took to roaming through the caverns, especially through the nearby mushroom forest. On one such trip, she spied an enormous gemstone; “Surely,” she thought, “If I bring this home, father will allow me to marry whomever I wish.” Unfortunately, upon closer examination the gemstone turned out to be a large mimic, which promptly attacked her.

Her doom was imminent, when her screams were heard by a passing Ranger, a Duergar named Rumer Bloodspike. Gilifra did not know whether to be more afraid of the mimic or the Duergar, but allowed him to rescue her. The two then talked at length, and finding much in common, began meeting clandestinely in the forest for a space of three months. The two have fallen deeply in love and now wish to get married. Such an action, obviously, would cause her father to descend into an apoplectic fit and sink her family and her clan–indeed, possibly even the kingdom–into a grueling war.

The two have therefore decided to elope. Rumer plans to bring three of his closest warrior friends with him to aid in their escape and elopement. Gilifra plans to scale from the heights of the veranda outside her bedchamber in Gravelfoot Stronghold. Perhaps, once they are married and have a hearth–and children–of their own, she can return and find her old family more accepting of her new family.
